The First Baptist Church of Hartsville occupies what was to be the chapel of the Hartsville College founded in 1850, which was one of only four co-educational institutions West of the Appalachians, drawing students from throughout the United States. The College was a vibrant influence for fifty years. Little remains of the college today except for the Cemetery and the Chapel, the College burned in 1898. Many of the College graduates became distinguished citizens in their communities throughout Indiana and the nation. The best known personage affiliated with the College was Milton Wright, father of Wilbur and Orville Wright, inventors of the airplane. In 1960, the Chapel became the home of the First Baptist Church of Hartsville, which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Since that time the building has been renovated and remodeled to accommodate a contemporary congregation while maintaining its historical presence in Bartholomew County. Many of the building’s furnishings including the pews remain from the time of the College. The original bell was removed from the steeple and placed on a platform in front of the church. Today, the congregation endeavors to maintain the historical significance of the building while remaining true to the Gospel of Jesus Christ as it seeks to become a vibrant Christian influence within the contemporary community of Hartsville and Bartholomew and Decatur counties.
